This book comes as close as you possibly can to violating one of the most important rules without precisely doing it. First published in Sweden in as Borkmanns punkt, I read and enjoyed the English translation by Laurie Thompson.
Slowly an idea of a connection between the victims starts to reveal itself to Van Veeteren, as the murderer's thinking is slowly revealed to the reader.
Having said that, it was definitely readable, with a good sense of place, a nice sense of humour and veeterren cast of characters with some potential.

Borkmann’s Point by Håkan Nesser
During the Golden Age of mystery writing, a group of writers famously came up with a list of absolute "don'ts" for writers. This excellent crime novel falls within the sub-genre of police procedural.
The translation seemed better, but it was done by the same translator. Thanks for telling us about the problem. I still wouldn't have figured it out myself.
